How to Groom Your Corgi Yourself at Home

grooming-blog.jpg

These days, I’ve taken to grooming my corgi myself, and it’s not too difficult. Knowing how to groom your dog is a great skill to have. It saves me money, and saves Willo from the stress of visiting the groomer! Definitely read this blog post If you want to know how we do at home grooming and the products we use. We also talk about trimming your dog’s nails yourself and how to help them get used to it.

Here are the grooming tools I use, and how I use them:

Best Dog Shampoos and Brushes for Shedding

1. Kin + Kind Charcoal Shampoo

I love this shampoo because it sucks out all the dirt and toxins from Willo’s coat while brightening and whitening it, and it makes her smell like a spa. I give her a nice deep scrub with this shampoo.

2. Kin + Kind Moisturizing Conditioner

This conditioner is great because it helps your pups maintain their skin’s natural oils that keep their skin from drying out.

3. Water-free shampoo

Kin+Kind’s Lavender waterless shampoo is great for when your pup needs a quick bath. I love taking it on trips with us so I can keep Willo clean no matter where we are.

4. Leave in conditioner

I like to spray a leave in conditioner on Willo’s coat before brushing her. I buy it on amazon and can be found here.

5. Kin + Kind Coconut Oil

Coconut oil for dogs is a great thing to add into your pup’s food to keep their coat soft and shiny.

6. De-shedding Blade

This contraption looks like it could skin a fish, but I swear it’s the best tool in my arsenal for brushing out Willo’s fur. It should be used in by starting from the top of your dogs head and moving all the way down in small strokes.

7. Slicker brush

The slicker brush is perfect for dogs with a double coat because it grabs all the dead and loose hairs under the top coat. Use this brush after using the de-shedding blade, and brush your dog in long strokes from head to booty.

8. Thinning shears

I use thinning shears to trim Willo’s booty and underbelly hairs. They may seem like they’re not cutting anything at first, but that is a good thing. Trying to trim your dog’s hair with any other type of scissors can lead to a disaster.

For corgi owners: If you’re attempting to trim your dog’s booty, start by doing a little bit at a time. You’re probably not going to achieve that perfect round momo like you’d get at the groomers, but it is a great way to maintain that length and keep their hair from getting too long.

How to Trim Your Dog’s Nails

9. Dremel 7700

Trimming your dog’s nails is so important! When your dog’s nails are long and pressing into the ground when they walk, it can be painful and harmful to their overall health. Dremel's are a great way to trim your pup’s nails, but they do take some getting used to.

I started doing Willo’s nails when she was a couple weeks old, and it took some time. She still hates it, but she finally tolerates it with out having to give her a piece of cheese in the middle of each nail.

If you’re new to nail trimming, start but giving your pup a high value treat after just tapping the dremel to their nail. After while you’ll be able to work your away up to a full nail, paw and then all four paws in one sitting.

I lay Willo on her back between my legs when doing her nails and I think it give me the best control and access to her paws.

TIP: Instead of dremeling straight on, I do the right side of the nail, the left side, and then middle to give Willo’s nails a rounded look.

10. Trimmer

I use a hair trimmer made for dog paws to clean up the hair around her paws. This ensures she can get enough traction on the floor and won’t slip around on our hardwoods.

11. Kin + Kind Nose and Paw Balm

After I trim Willo’s nails I like to add a coat of paw balm just to keep her paw pads smooth. It’s especially great for cold and hot weather days when their paws take a beating.

12. Burts Bees wipes

I always like to have some wipes on hand to clean Willo’s paws with.

Best Ways to Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Clean

13. Toothbrush

I bought this toothbrush set on amazon. When Willo was a puppy, her vet told me to brush her teeth every night just to teach her to be patient when a human in looking in her mouth. Now I try to do it as often as I can, although I may get to it every couple of weeks.

14. Finger toothbrush

I like the finger toothbrush because they are more gentle on Willo’s gums.

15. Toothpaste

Willo love the taste of the toothpaste, and it’s the reason why she lets me brush her teeth. I get this toothpaste on Amazon.

16. Bristly

Bristly acts as treat for Willo and it is a great way for Willo to keep her teeth clean between brushes.

And that’s it! It might seem overwhelming at first, but its also super rewarding being able to keep your pup clean yourself.
